Shipping

Shipping emits about 1 billion tonnes of CO2 per year and is a major source to toxic air pollution.

Around 85% of all cargo is transported by ships that use around 7 million barrels of fuel oil every day. That is 3-4 times the oil export of Kuwait. If shipping was a nation, it would be the sixth largest climate polluter in the world. Without further actions pollution will increase.

Most fuel oils used for ships are waste products from refineries containing 500 times more sulphur than standard EU road diesel. The fuel oil is combusted in ship engines without flue gas cleaning (no filters or catalytic converters) leading to extremely high emissions of toxic air pollution.

Existing technical solutions can reduce global warming and minimize air pollution from shipping. To reach zero emission shipping new fuels are needed e.g., hydrogen/ammonia produced by P2X using air, water, and clean electricity from wind, sun, or hydro power. However, P2X needs to be implemented carefully – else it will jeopardize green transition of other sectors.

Green Global Future promotes cleaner shipping by:

  • Working on stricter global regulation in UN (IMO) negotiations.
  • Using existing regulation to implement the Arctic HFO ban, ECAs, etc.
  • Supporting stricter regulation by regional entities such as the EU and US.
  • Collaborating with Danish/EU authorities on regulation and enforcement.
  • Participating in many international networks focused on cleaner shipping.
  • Engaging with the progressive shipping industry incl. clean-tech suppliers.
  • Establishing national regulation on shore power in ports, electric ferries, etc.
  • Arranging international high-level conferences for knowledge exchange.
  • Presswork to highlight both the pollution and the many technical solutions.
  • Performing air quality measurements in ports and surrounding port cities.

Green Global Future creates cleaner shipping in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Sea

Green Global Future is affiliated entity in the large EU LIFE project:
LIFE4MECA with the purpose to designate Emission Control Areas in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Sea to reduce health hazardous and climate damaging emissions of air pollution from ships.

The key project tasks of Green Global Future are:

  • To conduct air quality measurements in key Mediterranean and Atlantic port cities.
  • To arrange workshops and press meetings in key Mediterranean and Atlantic port cities.
  • To facilitate the development and implementation of an Atlantic Emission Control Area by providing the necessary assistance and input to the IMO and Atlantic states.
